Gardening Center - Bird House Delivery Using DeliveryMark

A few months ago I had visited a local gardening and landscaping center. They made daily deliveries of soil, stone, garden decorations, and other items they sell to consumers.

I had given them my business card and had a quick conversation with them regarding the benefits of using DeliveryMark; assigning deliveries, tracking, collecting signatures, proof-of-delivery documents, and more.  They seemed somewhat interested but wasn’t sure they would take the next steps.

A few weeks later we had noticed they had registered for DeliveryMark but had not started using it.  We called the owner and arranged a quick online demo.  Once we showed it to him, he “got it” immediately and said he was going to start using it, with two of his five drivers, this week.

It worked well for the first two drivers and now all five drivers use it on a daily basis.

We have email’d with them numerous times and all seems ok.

Fast forward 6 weeks...

On Friday, we had a old, hand-made birdhouse delivered from the Gardening Center.   The driver arrived at our location, asked us to sign for the delivery, on the DeliveryMark app, of course, and went on his way.

Before leaving, I asked the driver if he liked the app.  He said it’s easy to use and made his life much easier not dealing with paper!  

I just smiled but did not tell him we were with DeliveryMark.

Caterer / Barbecue Company Photos… Is Spring Finally here?

One of our DeliveryMark clients is a caterer who often run barbeques and parties for many organizations. They decided to use DeliveryMark because these events require coordination of many products all arriving at the same location.  As they have told us, they often have multiple vans and trucks bringing food, tents, barbecues, equipment, employees, and other items to an event.

Management thought it would be beneficial to document what is being done and have the ability to track the locations of the vans/truck/people on the day of an event. Hence the use of DeliveryMark.

The first barbeque of the season is today and they sent us a few photos of the setup and event.

Success Story Using DeliveryMark - Corporate Job And Entrepreneur

Here's another success story using DeliveryMark. This was a long story but here is the summary…

We heard from a man in his late 40’s who was about to be laid off.  He had worked for the same company for 20+ years and the company needed to down-size.  Unfortunately, he was one of the people who had to be let go.  He had 30 days notice of his last day and he had some severance pay.

He put together his resume and applied to many jobs on indeed.com and other web sites.

In the meantime, he also decided to start a delivery business in his town.  He spoke to friends and family to get connections of people / businesses that would need deliveries.  He signed up for DeliveryMark.

Taking Control of His Career - Starting a Delivery Business

Last week I had a conversation with young man in his late 20’s.  Nice guy. Outdoors guy who likes to hike, skateboard, bike, camp, etc…  He graduated from college and, based upon our conversation, sounds intelligent and ambitious.

Like many people his age, he was unsure of his career-path, but is certain he needs to make more money. 

He had been working as a mortgage broker.  As expected, his income was dependent upon the real estate market, interest rates, the economy, etc.   Regardless of how hard he worked, he never knew how much, or little, money he would make during a given month.  He wanted to take control of his career.

He had contemplated doing Uber or Lyft. Upon doing some research, he thought it better to leverage the local friends and acquaintances, and start a delivery / courier business.

(Side note: We (DeliveryMark) have Uber and Lyft drivers who decided to continue with them and also start making deliveries on their own.)

He decide to start a courier / delivery business and is using the DeliveryMark Delivery App. 

After 6 months his delivery business is growing.  He’s excited about the potential of the delivery business.  While he is still a mortgage broker, he hopes to leave that business in the next 12 months to focus on his delivery business.  When he cannot personally handle a delivery, he sends it to a friend to make the delivery. BTW, his friend is a real estate broker.

We are exited to see where he takes his business.

Young Entrepreneur Starts Successful Delivery Business Using DeliveryMark

We had a conversation this week a young entrepreneur using the DeliveryMark App and website to start a local delivery business.  It’s not a large business, yet, but he’s working on it.

He leveraged his relationships with local businesses and made deals to make local deliveries for a general store, a dry cleaner, a pet store, a pizza parlor store, and a flower shop.  The flower shop and pizza parlor had offered deliveries, but the other businesses had not previously offered deliveries.

 The businesses use DeliveryMark to request deliveries. As deliveries take place, the business owners can track the statuses of the deliveries.  They also receive proof-of-delivery documents upon completion of the deliveries.

He started the business by (a) creating deals with local store owners, (b) having his SUV for transportation, and (c) using the DeliveryMark Delivery App on his Android device. (Note: The DeliveryMark app works on IOS/Apple phones and devices, and Android phones and devices.)

Not that it didn’t take a lot of work and creativity, but he shows us how easy it is to get started.  He is still at the beginning of his business and is personally making all the deliveries.  He commented he would like to have the business grow so he had enough work to hire an additional driver.

Owner Operator Growing His Business With DeliveryMark

A year ago we had a conversation with a new owner operator.  He had started his business with a used 2011 Freightliner Sprinter 2500 and a list of people who had told him they would “try him out” for their deliveries.

Initially he signed up for DeliveryMark, because he wanted to allow his clients to track their deliveries without contacting him.  (Later, after a few months using DeliveryMark, he commented having the proof-of-delivery document made it easier for him to be organized and keep records of his deliveries.)

It’s a year later and his business is growing.  He has purchased another truck and hired a driver. 

His initial clients have continued to give him business and have referred new clients to him.  He has also started using load boards to add additional business.  He “picks his spots” and only takes the more profitable deliveries.

He has expanded what he moves and has found interesting and unanticipated deliveries. For example, recently he moved an antique clock and desk that he had found on a load board.

Happy Valentine’s Day – Happy DeliveryMark – Thank You

Recently, at a friend's birthday party, we had met the owner of a small, local flower shop. 

We “hit it off”, had a few drinks, and laughed a lot… Over the course of the evening we briefly discussed our families, businesses, careers, sports, etc…

He Started a Courier / Delivery Business

I just had a conversation with one of our DeliveryMark customers. “Jack” said it was OK for me to share his story.

Jack had lost his job and was looking around for things to do. He contemplated starting a business. He had a car, not much money, and no experience running a business.

To earn money, he drove for ride-hailing services. He said it was OK, but he really wanted to start his own business. He decided to start a courier / delivery business.

He spoke to a friend who was a lawyer to make sure he had all the paperwork and insurance in place.  He had a couple of buddies who said they would use him.

Deliveries. Your Business. Your Brand.

You run a retail business.  It’s a competitive marketplace and your customers are important to you.  

How do you differentiate yourself to customers?  Better pricing?  Great customer service? Promotions?  New and trendy items or products?

Hey, whatever is working and is successful for you, keep doing it.  And keep testing new ‘stuff’...  Afterall, you know your business better than anyone else.  You also know the effort it takes to acquire new customers and keep current customers happy. It’s not easy.

How about offering deliveries?  

Make it convenient for your customers to purchase from you.  Increase that lifetime value of that customer! Depending upon what you sell, it may make sense to offer deliveries.

If your customers are local, there seems to be various ways to offer deliveries.   

A. One way is to use one of those big online systems that are very ‘trendy’ and popular right now. You can digitally request a delivery and they will have someone come, pick up your product, and have it delivered to the customer.  But…

That’s the easy way out but not necessarily the best thing for your business. Using them, you don’t know who is making the delivery and how they will treat your customer. These delivery people are basically just trying to complete as many deliveries as possible. They do not care about your business.  Remember,  these delivery people are a reflection on you, your business and your brand. When they show up at the destination with your product they represent you.

B. The better way is to handle the delivery yourself.  When I say yourself, I mean you or one of your employees.  

Every contact you have with a customer is an opportunity. A friendly delivery person makes your customer feel appreciated.  Treat them like they’re special. You can also have your delivery person present them with a promotion, coupon, or other message. You control the relationship with your customer.

When you have one of these outside delivery services make a delivery for you, you are losing control of your customer.  Who is the driver? It seems like a quick and easy solution, but, in the long run, you want to control the relationship with your customer.

How to add Deliveries? Have a car or truck? Have a responsible, friendly, personable employee? You know your business. Think about what you need to offer deliveries. It should not be difficult. We suggest speaking to your attorney and insurance agent to make sure you are not overlooking anything.

Proof-Of-Delivery Document proves his driver did not cause damage

A happy DeliveryMark Delivery App client sent us this email.  He quickly resolved an issue by presenting the Proof-Of-Delivery Document to the client, to prove his driver did not damage the delivery.

I saw the email you posted from the company that used your proof of delivery to help them get paid.

We had a similar but different situation with a client.  We picked up some boxes for a delivery and one of them was damaged.  At pickup, our driver took a photo of it and made a comment using the app.

The manager at the destination called and questioned us about that one particular box.  We sent him a copy of the epod and he immediately dropped the matter.

I wish we had started using it sooner because we’ve had other similar instances of customers questioning damages on our deliveries.

He claimed our delivery person dented the boxes. He requested we discount the cost of the delivery.  I politely said No and hung up the phone. I then forwarded a copy of his proof-of-delivery document, containing the photos, to him.  I called him back and he agreed to pay the entire amount.

Part-Time Odd-Job, Delivery Person Starting Courier Business

I met a guy in a parking lot as I was looking as his Chevy Van.   I was just walking around it and he asked what I was doing.  I told him I appreciate old vehicles.

We struck up a conversation.   He worked as a custodian in a local school and, on the weekend, did odd-jobs, made deliveries, and was a handy man.  He needed to make additional money to try to pay for his kid’s college education.

His liked the delivery, courier business.  He was planning on focusing on the courier business, and, if it all works out, he hoped to be making some “real money” in 12-18 months from now.

• He had made a good number of contacts who were willing to give him a shot.   
• He likes dealing with people, and comes across sincere and friendly. (I’ll vouch for that. After just a few minutes, I felt very comfortable speaking with him.) 
• He had the truck and the proper insurance.  He knows the area.
• He was in the process of completing the required local town / municipality / county / state documents to start the business.

He was ready.  He was enthused and seemed passionate about it. He seemed to have the entrepreneurial spirit!
